BANK! - A RESIDENCY ON THE WaddenSEA

The Wadden Sea has something magical. That expansive landscape, that rhythm of ebb and flow, that slowed-down life on board… exactly the right conditions for a writing camp where music isn't just made, but simply created. This year, we boarded De Pallieter from Foltaazje to guide musicians, produce, and integrate the space into a musical product. BANK! became a floating studio, a temporary home, and a laboratory for ideas.

Our role

Mark was on board as producer and technical guide. We helped the artists focus on their surroundings, explored sonic directions, built arrangements, made sketches, recorded, and simply facilitated whatever was needed to get into the flow. Sometimes that was technical finesse, sometimes it was a good conversation, and sometimes it was silence. The crew

Eight creators worked on board, each bringing their own world:

Camillo Donoso (BE), Marit Nygard, Faske, Jelle Mulder, Emma Hessels (BE), ISZA, Rian Snoeks (BE), and Sarah Naemi.

A diverse collection of styles, languages, and temperaments—precisely the mix a camp like this needs to truly erupt.

During the days on the water, writers retreated to corners of the deck, beats were formed in the galley, and choruses were whispered to the wind so as not to lose them. As soon as an idea landed, we were ready to capture it: microphones off, a portable setup on, recording, listening back, refining—that constant game of searching and finding.

A floating studio

The boat naturally became a sounding board. The soft thumping of the mast, the rustling along the hull, the birdsong above the mudflats—it all seeped into the music. Not literally, but as atmosphere, as energy. The tranquility helped everyone connect with their core. Without distractions, without time pressure. The focus returned to what music is, at its core: expression and connection.

Everything is captured

Videographer Jim was there to document the process. No posed shots, but real moments: conversations, rehearsals, spontaneous jams, the quiet work behind the laptop, and the wonder when an idea suddenly clicks. This material will be released later, as a visual account of a remarkable journey.

Why silence is important

At Foltaazje, we believe that growth arises when creators come together in circumstances that allow for vulnerability, experimentation, and joy. BANK! on the Wadden Sea was exactly that: a place where artists came into motion, both musically and personally. Not because they had to, but because they could.

We return to shore with new sketches, new connections, and a fresh perspective on what making music can be. And with gratitude for everyone who made this experience possible.

Recording Musician on the mudflats

We'll be sharing the documentary soon. Until then, the Wadden Sea wind will linger in our ears.
